Getting Started With TRISA Envoy
Learn how to implement TRISA Envoy, the only open source, secure, P2P travel rule messaging solution under active development.
Last updated: 13 January 2026
Welcome to TRISA Envoy
Envoy is TRISA’s open-source, encrypted, peer-to-peer messaging service for Travel Rule compliance. It enables compliance teams to securely exchange originator and beneficiary data while protecting PII and meeting local regulatory requirements. Secure, flexible, and cost-effective by design.
See how Envoy manages encrypted transfers, counterparties, customer information, and Sunrise messages for travel rule compliance.
Why consider TRISA Envoy?
- Travel Rule–ready compliance: Exchange required originator and beneficiary data using open standards aligned with FATF guidance.
- Strong customer data protection: E2E encrypted, peer-to-peer messaging minimizes data exposure and breach risk.
- Lower total compliance cost: Open-source, protocol-agnostic design avoids vendor lock-in and per-message fees.
- Universal counterparty coverage: Communicate via TRISA or TRP, with Sunrise email fallback when counterparties lack protocol support.
- Standards-based and audit-friendly: Native IVMS101 support simplifies audits and regulatory change management.
- Future-proof architecture: Community-governed protocols evolve with global regulation, reducing long-term rework.
Update: Envoy Expands Global Reach with Sunrise Email Messaging Complete Travel Rule exchanges with out-of-network counterparties via email using Envoy's Sunrise Email messaging service. Subscribers to the Envoy managed service also have access to the Daybreak contact database, containing contact information for over 1,500 VASPs, to facilitate messaging.
Implementation Options
Envoy is designed to be flexible and accessible. VASPs have two implementation options to consider: (1) Managed Service (paid); (2) Self host (open source). Both options require registration with TRISA’s Global Directory Service (GDS). Please review the steps below and consider the options carefully.
Step 1: Decide How Your Organization Will Implement Envoy
| Option >> | 1. Managed Service (paid) | 2. Self-host Envoy (open source) |
|---|---|---|
| Description | Rotational will install, configure, host, maintain, and support your Envoy service. Service includes identity certificates, a dedicated, provenance-aware server with regional deployments, redundant and encrypted data backups, and storage space for over 500k messages. Service also includes unlimited seats and access to the Daybreak contact database of over 1,500 VASPs for use with the Sunrise email messaging feature. | Envoy is open source (MIT License). Download, Helm install, integrate, test, host and support your own Envoy messaging service for travel rule compliance. Open source implementation requires time and technical expertise. VASPs should plan accordingly and rely on documentation as support is limited. Teams must also maintain and upgrade Envoy when new releases are available. |
| Best for | VASPs seeking a turnkey solution with minimal effort while leveraging expert support & maintenance for sustained regulatory adherence. | VASPs that want maximum flexibility and control to customize Envoy for their use cases, and have the technical resources to integrate with their systems. |
| Requirements | VASPs must sign a managed services agreement and a data protection agreement; register with TRISA GDS. | VASPs must provide their own infrastructure, including compute and data storage, and technical expertise; register with TRISA GDS. |
| Time to Implement | 1-2 days | 4-6 weeks |
| Cost | USD $375.00/ month/ node (6-month min commitment) | USD $0.00 |

Step 2: Join TRISA’s Global Directory Service (GDS)
The Global Directory Service (GDS) is a network of trusted VASPs and members. Any market participant with a legitimate business purpose may join TRISA. Most operators start by registering for Testnet x.509 identity certificates at no cost. It takes 1 business day to complete the validation process. Once verified and ready to move to production, operators can submit to join TRISA’s Mainnet, also at no cost. Note: If you opt for the hosted service, Rotational will provide your endpoints.
- Visit trisa.directory and create an account
- Start/ complete the TRISA GDS registration form
- Contact envoy@rotational.io with questions
Depending on the implementation option and GDS registration, Envoy can take as little as 1-2 business days to implement with the hosted service or 2-3 months with the open source implementation.
